Characteristics of 2015
Champagne enjoyed a glittering 2015 vintage.
The growing season was notable for being the hottest vintage ever recorded. The hot conditions did make drought an issue and some yields were reduced by 20 percent, with berries failing to grow properly. However, the hot, dry conditions did prevent the development of disease and rot and producers were often spared from using sprays and pesticides. A few have commented that these unusual circumstances meant their wines ended up adhering to organic standards purely through circumstance rather than actual trying. The intensely hot weather ran from June through to August with the end of August seeing a touch of relieving rain along with cooler nights. Along with being one of the hottest growing seasons on record, it was also one of the shortest. The harvest began late August and continued into the September. For Ay, Chardonnay and pinot noir started on the 7 September and the pinot meunier on 5 September.
Despite the smaller than average yields, the resulting wines were stunning. Conditions were such that both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay excelled, and the wines tended to be beautifully balanced with rich, intense fruit.
Despite relatively low acidity levels (2015 is the lowest acid year since 2003), most feel that the wines of this predominantly warm, dry year are finely balanced, structured, fresh, concentrated and meant for long ageing. A vintage year for all -- with some growers claiming that 2015 is the best vintage since 1947!!
In this context, winegrowers and houses, met in Epernay within the Interprofessional Champagne Wine Committee and agreed on a marketable yield of 10,500 kilos/hectare, of which 500 kilos/hectare come from the Champagne reserve.
Clearly a superb vintage, 2015 Champagne will drink very nicely now but the best examples are likely to cellar and develop even further.
Comprised of 50% Pinot Noir (30% 2018 and 20% 2017) and 50% Chardonnay (2018 only). The Chardonnay is fruity and fresh while the Pinot Noir brings body and power to the blend.
The visual:
On pouring, the effervescence forms an immaculate carpet of foam which slowly fades away to give way to a thin bead. The robe is golden colour with slight greenish reflections. Very fine bubbles.
The nose:
Aromas of yellow fruits mingle with citrus fruits (clementines, orange peel). Followed by notes of maturity such as dried apricot and ripe wheat make the aromatic panel more complex.
The mouth:
Tense mouth. Lively, sharp, and sparkly but without aggressiveness. The low dosage reveals great freshness. The aromas are slightly smoky and roasted. A very fresh finish taste of citrus and mineral.
Food pairing:
This Brut de Brut champagne can be served with oysters or a carpaccio of salmon with dill, crabs and sushi.
