The history of Domaine Delhome is above all, that of a family who have worked for generations to bring Crozes-Hermitage appellation d'origine contrôlée wines to the highest level of excellence. Marked by the passion for the land and the vines for more than five generations, the Delhome family is part of a long wine-growing tradition.
The story of Domaine Delhome is of father, Gérald, and his son Romain, united by their love of grapes and the terroir, cultivating the same desire to push their knowledge and know-how to the highest levels and degree of expertise.
Gérald Delhome settled on the farm in 1993 to develop arboriculture while nourishing his passion for viticulture.
Romain joined his father at the estate in 2018, after several years dedicated to studying and discovering wines, especially AOC Crozes-Hermitage wines. Excelling both in viticulture and in the cellar, Romain developed a unique know-how and in-depth knowledge by learning skills in different wine-growing structures in the Rhône Valley (Gigondas, Ventoux, etc.) and on the United States East Coast.
The two men, carried by the breadth of their work in synergy, created their own wine cellar in 2019: this was the birth of Domaine Delhome, an exceptional producer of Crozes-Hermitage appellation d'origine contrôlée wines.
Romain Delhome: a destiny rooted in the family winemaking tradition
‘It's hard to escape your destiny when you're born in the heart of the vineyard’... Romain Delhome undoubtedly fell into the barrel when he was little! He developed a curiosity whilst working on his father’s land, a taste for quality products, but also a knowledge of wines and mastery of tasting. Over the years Romain has gone on to perfect these inherited qualities.
At the same time he became a man of the vineyards, able to take charge of the work of the wine estate, and a knowledgeable connoisseur of the techniques specific to the vinification and the aging of the wine. Romain Delhome exercised his talents as cellar master at Domaine de La Verrière, Chêne Bleu at Crestet, after years of study dedicated to the knowledge of wines and several years crisscrossing the vineyards of France and the world always in search of more knowledge.
It was in 2018 that Romain Delhome joined his father Gerald at the winery that now bears their name.
Gérald Delhome: the passion for excellence at the service of the Crozes-Hermitage AOC
If there is one word that characterizes Gérald Delhome, it is passion. Passion for the land and the resources necessary for its cultivation, passion for quality work and passion for commitment to the Crozes-Hermitage AOC, prestigious appellation.
After studying Arboriculture and Water Management, Gérald Delhome moved to the estate in 1993. In Larnage, cradle of the "Bergeron" apricot, apricot trees rub shoulders with the vines within the Delhome farm! This double culture, with the most beautiful fruits in the vineyards and orchards, was the beginning of an unwavering commitment to a wine production method that respects the environment.
The Vision of Domaine Delhome: unique Crozes-Hermitage AOC wines, the fruit of an eco-committed approach.
At Domaine Delhome, Gérald and Romain make a point of honouring the work of their vines with care and love. More than quantity, it is quality that is required in their vineyards in the respect of Mother Nature.
The work of pruning, moving, sweeping (removal of the intercores for better aeration of the bunches) and soil work are carefully orchestrated to put the vines in the best possible condition and thus offer the best of their potential.
Each terroir and each cuvée bear a particular signature, guaranteeing the typicity of the estate's crus. Each cuvée is unique.
Anxious to be part of an eco-committed approach, at Domaine Delhome, Gérald and Romain make sure to use the most nature-friendly products. Convinced that environmental respect is an essential condition for the optimal expression of the terroir and the development of unique Crozes-Hermitage AOC crus, the two men are committed to preserving the surrounding ecosystem. and their wines carry the High Environmental Value certification.
But their eco-responsible approach does not stop there, since the production of Domaine Delhome has just been engaged in a process of conversion to Organic Farming, pushing their desire to produce unique wines in symbiosis with the diversity of the surrounding ecosystem.
Gérald and Romain take great pride in producing haute couture, unique, racy and distinctive wines, while maintaining a family farm respectful of the environment.
"If making wine is revealing a part of oneself, there is no doubt that the unique crus of AOC Crozes-Hermitage from Domaine Delhome deliver to those who want to hear a story of men and women of passion, whose unfailing dedication allows the vine to express its full personality. "
The entire parcel of Domaine Delhome is located in the north of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation, and more particularly in the communes of Crozes Hermitage, Larnage, Gervans and Erôme.
No less than 20 carefully worked plots are distributed between these four municipalities, thus benefiting from a diversity of soil, exposure and altitude.
Domaine Delhome enjoys a generous climate combining sunshine and freshness, thanks in particular to the altitude and the hillsides sheltered from the north wind. Human intervention also plays a key role in the wines they produce.
It is by knowing how to read, interpret and adapt to its terroirs, while respecting the environment, that Domaine Delhome draws all the quintessence.
‘If it is often said that the terroir results from the subtle alchemy between the climate, the earth and the know-how of man, that of Domaine Delhome seems to result from a little magic too! ‘
